Scotland is well known for its captivating beauty and wild spaces. A country where you can escape the hustle and bustle of urban life. A place to disconnect from technology and reconnect with yourself. Total bliss for mums and dads but what about the kids? Read on for our tips on the top family friendly activities and attractions in Scotland.

Finding Balance in Family Holidays

Family holidays are all about balance. In my experience of Scottish family holidays there was always a little bit of give and take. Yes, we had to go round the pottery shop but then there was ice-cream. Yes, we had to go for a walk but then there was hot chocolate.

Now as an adult, I can see my parents were very much employing the carrot and stick approach. I look back fondly on our summer holidays and now I’m more interested in the pottery and walks than the sweet treats. One thing does ring true though; family holidays are all about balance. Finding activities or locations that inspire and engage all ages, so you can have a shared experience, create memories and have fun. That’s exactly what we’re going to explore in this article.

Immersive Historical Experiences

One way to spark the imagination of young and old alike is through immersive experiences.

The Scottish Cranog Centre, on the shores of Loch Tay, opened its doors to the public in April 2024. It showcases what life was like 2500 years ago, for the people of Scotland, living during the Iron Age. Let the experts guide you through the replica village and take part in traditional activities of the time.

The Highland Folk Museum, which lies in the Cairngorm National Park. Britain’s first open air museum looks at life in the highlands during the 1700s to the 1950s. With over 35 historical buildings to explore, some used as filming locations for Outlander, all members of the family will be swept back in time. Both locations are easily incorporated into a Nomadic Scotland itinerary.

Wildlife & Nature Spotting

Going nature spotting as a family is another great way to make memories.

Blair Drummond Safari Park and the Highland Wildlife Park are both excellent options to get up close with some native and non-native species of animals. These parks are great as they have so much to see and do.

If you’re visiting the coast why not jump on board a boat and go and see some of Scotland’s famed sea life. Whales, dolphins, seals and otters all call Scotland home. Some are migratory and others are here year-round. Catch tours from Oban or Ullapool or from many of the Scottish islands like Mull, Skye, Lewis or Harris.

Don’t forget you can also go monster spotting on Loch Ness, where you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Scotland’s most revered resident: Nessie.

At Nomadic Scotland we’re always happy to help build a trip based on what the kids are most excited to see, whether that’s a soaring eagle, a highland cow or a haggis!

High-Octane Adventures for Thrill-Seeking Families

Perhaps you are after a more hi-octane adventure with your children. They can be really frustrating sometimes so why not throw them off a bridge, attached to a bungee rope of course, at Highland Fling Bungee. Or perhaps you’d like to soak up some fresh Scottish water while rafting, gorge walking or coasteering. Scotland is a hotspot for mountain biking and there are plenty of places to test you and your kids’ skills. Lift accessed or self-propelled the team at Nomadic Scotland know where to send you. Don’t fancy the mountain part of biking, there’s plenty of gravel riding to be found too.

Perhaps your little monkeys would prefer to hang out in the trees? There are several tree-top assault courses and zip-line parks in Scotland. Finally, back to the water with a family surf lesson in Thurso or take advantage of Europe’s largest wave pool and the world’s largest inland surf resort: Lost Shore, conveniently located on the outskirts of Edinburgh. Some of the Nomadic Scotland team are adrenaline junkies themselves, so would revel in the opportunity to build you a non-stop, multi-day, family frenzy action sport holiday.

Relaxed Family Activities

Not to worry if your family wants to keep their feet on the ground and prefers a more sedate pace. We know the best beaches for a family stroll, the reserves that offer an opportunity for family and nature connection, places where the majesty of the natural world will take your breath away, the spots where the fairies live, and the haggis and unicorns might still roam.

The best part of taking a trip in one of our vehicles is you are free to write your family story the way you want. Safe in the knowledge that when you book with us, you become part the Nomadic family and get the knowledge and support that goes with it. And if all else fails, we know where you can get the ice creams and hot chocolates too!
