CalMac Ferries & Nomadic Scotland

A Nomadic Scotland road trip is about freedom — and with CalMac Ferries, that freedom extends beyond the mainland.

Our partnership with CalMac allows travellers to explore some of Scotland’s most remarkable island destinations. From the Outer Hebrides and Isle of Mull to Arran, Islay and beyond. Ferry travel becomes part of the adventure itself: a pause between landscapes, a chance to slow down, and a gateway to places that feel truly remote.

With ferry crossings carefully built into your itinerary, you can experience Scotland’s islands without the stress of planning routes, timings or logistics.

Featured Experience: Mainland to Islands Adventure

Day 1 – Collect your 4×4 in Perth
Begin your journey at our Perth base, where we’ll introduce you to your Land Rover Defender and talk you through your route. From there, head west towards Scotland’s dramatic coastal roads, passing lochs, glens and mountain scenery along the way.

Day 2 – West Coast Roads & Ferry Crossing
Continue towards the coast and board your CalMac ferry. The crossing becomes part of the experience — a moment to step out, take in the sea air and watch the mainland give way to island horizons.

Day 3 – Island Exploration
Spend the day exploring at your own pace. Drive quiet single-track roads, discover hidden beaches, visit local producers, or stop for a long lunch overlooking the sea. This is Scotland at its most peaceful and atmospheric.

Day 4 – Wildlife, Whisky & Remote Landscapes
Depending on your chosen island route, your day might include wildlife watching, a distillery visit, coastal walks, or simply following the road wherever it leads. With your Defender as your base, the island becomes yours to explore.

Day 5 – Return by Ferry & Continue the Journey
Take the ferry back to the mainland and continue your Nomadic Scotland road trip — refreshed, inspired and ready for the next stage of the adventure.

More than just a journey

Ferry travel in Scotland isn’t simply about getting from one place to another—it’s part of the experience itself.

Standing on deck as you leave the mainland behind, watching the coastline fade into the distance, and arriving somewhere that feels quieter, wilder and more remote—it marks a shift in pace and perspective.

It’s this transition that makes island travel so memorable. The road gives way to open water, and the journey takes on a different rhythm—slower, more immersive, and deeply connected to the landscape.

With CalMac as part of your Nomadic Scotland itinerary, these moments aren’t incidental—they’re built into the journey.

Testimonials

I just loved, loved my 10 days in Scotland with my Nomadic Discovery. The car actually felt like mine and I really didn’t want to give her back. An enormous thank you to Nomadic Scotland for everything. I was so impressed with the state of the vehicle exterior, the cleanliness of the interior and how well equipped the camping pack was. Everything I needed, and nothing I didn’t. Many companies are great to deal with pre-sale, but the service and care provided by you and Sam continued through to vehicle pickup, during my trip (thank you for the weather updates!) and even after I’d dropped the vehicle off. Looking forward to returning. No better way to travel Scotland.
