Route Overview

This West Coast Scotland self-drive itinerary begins and ends in Perth. Forming a scenic loop through some of Scotland’s most iconic landscapes. Designed for adventurous families and first-time visitors, the route combines famous Highland landmarks with manageable driving days, island exploration, and spectacular scenery.

Leaving Perth, the journey heads north through Highland Perthshire, passing Dunkeld and Aberfeldy before reaching the peaceful shores of Loch Tay. From here, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic as the route turns west towards Glencoe, with optional detours such as Glen Etive, famous for its cinematic mountain landscapes.

From Glencoe, the route continues north via Fort William and through the sweeping valleys of Glen Shiel, before stopping at the iconic Eilean Donan Castle and crossing onto the Isle of Skye. Time on Skye is spent exploring the Trotternish Peninsula, home to some of Scotland’s most recognisable landmarks including the Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing, Kilt Rock, and the Fairy Glen.

Leaving Skye, the journey travels east towards Inverness, with the option to explore Loch Ness before turning south into Cairngorms National Park. Ancient pine forests, sandy loch shores, and wide-open landscapes define this final stage of the route, which returns to Perth via Aviemore, Pitlochry, and the scenic Highland heartland.

Testimonials

We rented a defender with the camping package for a week from Nomadic to do a tour of the Scottish coast and had the most unforgettable experience! Was so easy to plan the route, activities and great food spots with the extremely helpful Alex and Sandy, and with everything you need to camp being included in the package there is no stress in getting organised for the trip!

Definitely going to use Nomadic again, and have already been recommending to friends and family. Thanks so much to the team!
