Route Overview
This Scottish Highlands self-drive itinerary begins and ends in Perth. Taking you on a scenic loop through some of the most iconic and varied landscapes in Scotland. Designed with families in mind, the route features manageable driving distances, frequent stops, and a mix of outdoor adventure, culture, and wildlife experiences.
Starting in Perth, the journey gradually heads north through the rolling hills of Perthshire before reaching Dunkeld, where woodland walks and riverside scenery set the tone for the trip. Continuing on to Aberfeldy, the route follows historic Highland roads through charming villages and forested glens before reaching Killin, home to the Falls of Dochart. The road then climbs west into the dramatic landscapes of Glencoe, passing through Glen Etive, one of Scotland’s most spectacular valleys. This area is known for its towering mountains, hiking opportunities, and abundant wildlife, making it a highlight of the trip.
From Glencoe, the route travels north via Fort William towards the legendary waters of Loch Ness. A stop in Drumnadrochit offers the chance to explore Urquhart Castle or take a boat trip on the loch before continuing to Inverness, the cultural capital of the Highlands. Leaving Inverness, the journey heads south into Cairngorms National Park, a vast area of ancient forests, open moorland, and lochs. Here, families can enjoy gentle walks, wildlife parks, forest adventures, and watersports at Loch Morlich.
The final leg returns south to Perth along the A9, with opportunities to stop at historic sites and local food spots along the way — including a memorable encounter with Highland cattle — before completing the loop back at Nomadic Scotland.
