Thoughtfully paced and built on local knowledge. This itinerary allows time to explore, rest, and adapt each day to suit your interests. Whether you’re travelling as a couple, family, or group of friends, this is Scotland experienced properly — unhurried, authentic, and unforgettable.

For this 18-night itinerary, we’ve suggested a hotel for each night if you are on our 4×4 vehicle hire only package, and a registered campsite if you’ve added the camping package. Just request our detailed PDF below for details. We always aim to support local businesses and many of these campsites have a rugged feel, while still providing amenities like showers or at least a proper loo.

Route Overview

This 18-night Scottish Extravaganza begins and ends in Perth. Forming a complete circular route through the Scottish Highlands, islands, and coastline. Designed to balance iconic highlights with quieter, lesser-visited regions, the journey allows you to experience Scotland at a relaxed pace while covering an extraordinary amount of ground.

Highlands

The route starts by heading north through the landscapes of the Cairngorms National Park, before reaching Inverness, the capital of the Highlands. From here, you join the legendary North Coast 500, following the coastline east and north. Past historic castles, wide sandy beaches, and rugged headlands. Highlights along this stretch include the far north at John o’ Groats, the dramatic cliffs of Duncansby Head, and the remote beauty of Durness.

From the north coast, the journey turns south along Scotland’s wild west coast. One of the most scenic driving regions in the country. Travelling through Assynt and along the shoreline to Ullapool, you’ll encounter vast open landscapes, turquoise waters, and quiet coastal roads before boarding the ferry to the Outer Hebrides.

Islands

Time on Harris and Lewis offers a completely different perspective of Scotland, with expansive white-sand beaches, ancient stone structures, and strong Gaelic culture. A second ferry crossing then brings you to the Isle of Skye. Where several days are dedicated to exploring the island’s most iconic landscapes, including the Trotternish Peninsula, waterfalls, coastal cliffs, and the Cuillin mountains.

Leaving Skye, the route continues through the quieter West Highland Peninsula. Including Ardnamurchan, one of the most remote and unspoilt parts of mainland Scotland. From here, you island-hop once more to the Isle of Mull, with opportunities to visit Iona or Staffa, before returning to the mainland at Oban.

Glencoe & Cairngorms

The final section of the journey travels north through Glencoe and along the shores of Loch Ness. Before turning east through Speyside whisky country and the scenic Snow Roads. Passing through Braemar and Pitlochry, the route gradually leads south, completing the loop back to Perth with a true sense of having experienced Scotland in full.

Testimonials

Had a fantastic wee trip up the North West Coast of scotland in a Land rover Defender supplied by Nomadic Scotland. Great vehicle, spotless and well maintained. All equipment supplied and the roof tent and awning were very easy to put up and of very good quality. Would definitely recommend this business if you are looking for an adventure in a land rover with a roof tent.
