Route Overview

Starting in the gentle landscapes of Perthshire, you drive north through Dunkeld and Aberfeldy, skirting Loch Tay before climbing into the dramatic mountains of Glencoe. From here, you turn west to Fort William. Pause at the postcard-perfect Eilean Donan Castle, then wind up over the hairpins of Bealach na Bà into Applecross. From this point on, the west coast sets the rhythm with winding lochside roads, Torridon’s dramatic peaks, and the open, sea-sky horizons of Gairloch and Ullapool. Along the way, you have time to linger on beaches, stretch your legs on short walks, and enjoy relaxed stops for fresh, local seafood.

You then continue north along some of the NC500’s most scenic stretches to Durness. With the freedom to detour to stunning beaches like Clachtoll and Achmelvich. The journey shifts pace with a ferry crossing to Orkney, where you’ll base yourself around Kirkwall and explore ancient Neolithic landmarks, wild cliffs, and unique wartime history. After returning to the mainland, you round off the route at John O’Groats, pass sea stacks and castle ruins along the east coast. Before heading inland to the Cairngorms National Park and finishing with an easy drive back toward Nomadic HQ.
