Route Overview

This Highlands and Islands road trip begins in Perth, where you set off north through Dunkeld and into the Cairngorms National Park. Here, forest walks, lochs and Highland produce set the tone for the journey. From there, the route continues to Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, before turning west to Ullapool for the ferry crossing to Lewis & Harris. Over the next two nights, you’ll explore wild beaches, historic sites and island distilleries across the Outer Hebrides.

Afterwards, you travel south by ferry from Harris to Uig on the Isle of Skye, where two full days are spent exploring Skye’s diverse regions — from the dramatic Trotternish Peninsula and Quiraing to coastal walks, waterfalls and distilleries. Leaving Skye, the route returns to the mainland either via the bridge or ferry, continuing south through Fort William and into Glencoe, one of Scotland’s most iconic mountain landscapes.

The final days take you through Oban and the west coast before finishing in Loch Lomond, offering a gentler, scenic conclusion before returning to Perth. With optional routes and flexible stops throughout, this itinerary balances iconic highlights with quieter, lesser-travelled areas.

Testimonials

This is a very belated review, but we had SUCH a fantastic trip to the Scottish highlands back in September, which was a birthday gift to my husband who has always wanted to go.
The setup from Nomadic Scotland could not have been more perfect for what we were looking for!
As we were only going for 4 nights, it was the perfect way to see all of the places we wanted to see without a faff of trying to find hotels etc which are far and few between.
