Route Overview

This 10-night self-drive itinerary takes you on a spectacular circular journey through the Scottish Highlands, combining the iconic North Coast 500 with extended time on the Isle of Skye. Beginning in Perth, the route heads north through Dunkeld, Aberfeldy and Glencoe. Then continues via Fort William to Skye, where you’ll spend two nights exploring its dramatic landscapes, coastal cliffs and famous landmarks. From Skye, the journey crosses the legendary Bealach na Bà to Applecross – a must-do experience. Then follows the rugged west coast through Torridon and Gairloch. Offering a mix of mountain scenery, lochs and some of Scotland’s most beautiful beaches.

Continuing north, the route winds through Ullapool and the remote northwest to Clachtoll and Lochinver. The reaches the far north at Durness and John O’ Groats. From here, the journey turns south along the east coast via Wick, Dornoch and Cromarty, with opportunities to visit historic castles, distilleries and coastal wildlife hotspots. The final leg returns to Perth via the A9, completing a well-paced loop of over 700 miles that showcases the very best of Scotland’s landscapes, culture and coastline.
