Route Overview
This Scottish Highlands self-drive itinerary begins and ends in Perth. Forming a scenic loop through two of Scotland’s most iconic national parks. Designed for adventurous families and first-time visitors, the route combines dramatic landscapes with manageable driving days, frequent stops, and a mix of outdoor adventure and cultural highlights.
Leaving Perth, the journey heads north through Highland Perthshire, with early stops at Dunkeld and The Hermitage. Offering peaceful woodland walks before entering Cairngorms National Park. Vast forests, open moorland, and lochs define this section of the route as you continue towards Inverness, the cultural capital of the Highlands.
From Inverness, the road turns west into Glen Affric, often described as one of Scotland’s most beautiful glens, known for its native woodland, quiet lochs, and excellent walking opportunities. The journey then follows the dramatic line of The Great Glen, travelling alongside the legendary waters of Loch Ness before continuing south to Fort William beneath the shadow of Ben Nevis.
The route winds through the iconic landscapes of Glencoe and across Rannoch Moor, before turning west towards the coast and the harbour town of Oban. Here, mountain scenery gives way to sea lochs and coastal views. Continuing south, the journey passes through Kilmartin Glen, rich in ancient history, and follows the shores of Loch Fyne to Inveraray.
On the final day, the route travels through Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, offering a relaxed and scenic drive before returning east through the Strathearn Valley and completing the loop back in Perth.
